When are Root Canals Necessary?
Your teeth are composed of three layers: the protective enamel, the white dentin, and the sensitive pulp. The pulp is blood vessels and nerves, supplying sensation and nutrients to the teeth.
While the enamel and dentin can be restored after decay, the pulp needs to be removed if it decays. The infection and death of the tooth pulp causes serious health problems for a patient. If the pulp is left within the tooth to decay, the tooth will have to be extracted to protect your oral health.
Signs that a root canal may be necessary include:
- Sensitivity to Temperature
- Pain while Chewing
- Abscess, Swelling, and Tenderness on the Gums
The Root Canal Process
Root canal therapy involves removing the pulp from an affected tooth. The pulp may already be infected or decadent, or an injury to the tooth may expose the pulp and so make its infection inevitable. The procedure allows a tooth that would otherwise require extraction to stay within the smile.
Dr. Dragon first accesses the pulp and carefully removes it from the inner root chambers. He makes sure all decayed and pulp tissue is removed. When finished with cleaning out the pulp, he adds a biocompatible sealing material the inside of the tooth to prevent further decay. Dr. Dragon then places a crown over the treated tooth to create an external seal and support the tooth’s structure.
Although the pulp supplies nutrients and sensation, the tooth can survive without the pulp. With root canal therapy, the tooth becomes healthy and strong.
